A year after their Centenary edition
triumph, Ferrari achieved another historic victory at the 2024 24 Hours of Le
Mans, the world's most renowned endurance race.
The official Ferrari – AF Corse team's
car number 50, a 499P, claimed victory after completing 311 laps, crossing the
finish line to the cheers of 329,000 spectators — a record attendance for Le
Mans. Nicklas Nielsen, alongside Miguel Molina and Antonio Fuoco, piloted the
car to victory.
The spotlight was on car number 50
throughout the race, leading for 72 laps. Meanwhile, the team's
"sister" Le Mans Hypercar, car number 51 driven by Alessandro Pier
Guidi, James Calado, and Antonio Giovinazzi — last year's winners — finished third,
just 36 seconds behind their teammates, adding to the day's excitement for
fans.
This triumph was the result of
flawless teamwork that kept Ferrari's official 499Ps competitive, optimizing
their Hypercars' performance and employing varied strategies, particularly with
tire choices, in response to the challenging weather conditions that included
nearly seven hours of Safety Car periods, especially overnight.
This victory marks Ferrari's 11th
overall win at Le Mans and their second consecutive triumph following last
year's success with car number 51 on June 11, 2023. Their previous victories
spanned from 1949 to 1965, with a total of 40 victories including 29 class
wins.
With this win at the 92nd 24 Hours of
Le Mans and a victory at the Monaco Formula 1 GP, Ferrari becomes the first
manufacturer since 1934 to win both of these prestigious races in the same
year, alongside the Indianapolis 500, constituting the "Triple Crown of
Motorsport."
One of the AF Corse team's entries,
car number 83, made its debut in the 2024 FIA WEC season. The Giallo
Modena-liveried Hypercar, driven by Yifei Ye (who celebrated his 24th birthday
on the race day), Robert Shwartzman, and Robert Kubica, led for 83 laps but
unfortunately retired after 248 laps.
Following this victory and the 50
championship points earned, Ferrari now sits second in the Manufacturers’
standings, trailing Porsche by nine points. In the Drivers’ standings, Fuoco,
Molina, and Nielsen are second, nine points behind the leaders, while Pier
Guidi, Calado, and Giovinazzi hold the sixth position.
